The inaugural Black Female Photographers Conference, The Vision Conference was held in Dallas, Texas October 15-17, 2018 at the Addison Conference & Theatre Center!

Black Female Photographers was launched by Kym Scott. As social media took off, Kym found herself on Facebook looking to connect with other Black women in photography. When she could not find what she was looking for, she decided to create a group of her own. She wanted the group to be a place where Black female photographers could offer support and develop strong bonds around their art. Out of the Facebook group grew this organization, Black Female Photographers (BFP). At over 2,000 members strong, this organization is Kym Scott’s crowning achievement in a photography career that spans more than a decade.

The Vision Conference was created to represent the voice of Black Female Photographers in the industry, while simultaneously being empowered, sharing collective knowledge, and expanding strong networks. This conference speaks to like-minded photographers, from the novice to the professional, who are ready to change the face of the industry so it more accurately represents the diversity, innovation, and creativity of all photographers and includes a piece of our stories in all of our images across every genre.

The event consisted of a welcome reception, seminars, keynote presentation by Kahran Bethencourt of Creative Soul Photography, various shoot-outs, small group mentoring with instructors, and a panel discussion “How to Make it as a Black Female Photographer.”

Tomayia Colvin, is an international wedding and senior portrait photographer, best-selling children’s book author, and photography educator in Houston, Texas. She is the Leader of the Northeast Houston Tuesday Together Group and drives to make the community a place of where everyone is welcome. She is on a mission to celebrate diversity and work with conferences and workshop organizers to bridge the color division and to include voices that are missing from the photography industry. She’s the mom of two dynamic little people and is often busy shuffling kids from basketball practice to Cub Scouts. She lives for the car rider line, Dr. Pepper, and making blue jeans, Converse, and t-shirts the new business casual.
