The Old Hollywood wedding theme has had a new life since Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby hit theaters, but its combination of simple, rich colors and opulent materials is much older, and much more timeless.  We worked to capture that juxtaposition of austere and luxurious, and the boldness of the Art Deco style, in a styled wedding inspiration shoot with all the exuberance of The Great Gatsby and the glamour and elegance of Old Hollywood.

Setting up this classic shoot started with a classic location: Old Town Spring, a historic railroad town north of Houston, TX whose hundred-year-old buildings provided both a twenties ambiance and a touch of authenticity.  Our creative director layered in Art Deco touches—the bride’s tiara, beaded wedding dress and pearls—and settled on a timeless black, ivory and gold color scheme to augment the elegant theme.  Accented with touches of green, the color scheme flourished in the natural outdoor light and added a touch of flair with the addition of a special prop: an authentic vintage Ford truck from 1950.

 

Inside, linens and place settings were layered carefully to create a look with depth and complexity: a gold sequined tablecloth, a black and white satin striped tablecloth and a black rosette tablecloth were combined to create a canvas that was simple, yet lush.  Atop that, each place setting used an elegant, vintage-style gold charger for the base, layered with glass-beaded edge chargers for a distinctive Art Deco look. A satin black napkin provided a distinct setting for the menu cards, flanked by understated flatware on each side of the chargers and a simple wine glass for each guest table.

 

The sweetheart table harmonized with the guest tables by using the same tablecloth and chargers base, but put a signature touch on the bride and groom’s place settings by substituting beautiful black-and-crystal fluted wine glasses to complement the gold sequined tablecloth.

 

Each table was anchored by its centerpiece, a combination of beautiful green florals that evokes the vibrant colors and shapes of the Art Deco period.  Twined Green Goddess calla lilies and Belles of Ireland created a natural structure that emulated 1920s artwork, and the green tea roses, trachellium and hypericum berries used in the bouquet and sweetheart table centerpiece tie in the romantic flair of the era, providing a unique alternative to the more traditional all-white florals and a strong complement to the black and gold décor.

 

To top off the glamourous look, the menu cards and table numbers were printed in a Gatsbyesque black, gold and ivory, with beautiful brooch detailing that added elegance and opulence, and carried through the layering effect into every last detail.
